Natural Window of Opportunity

21 Jan 2015

Did you know that many kids start learning another language just when their natural window of opportunity to learn a language closes? This natural window closes around the time of adolescence and is why Mandarin Stars is passionate about laying the foundations for fluency early - our littlest learners can start from the age of 1 with our immersion-based playgroups. This doesn't mean it is impossible to learn a language after adolescence, but it does mean that the natural instinct that children's brains have for easily picking up new languages is wasted. Every human brain has the capacity to learn a language the same way we learn our native tongue. Every child up to about this window of adolescence is able to learn a second, third or fourth language if they have an immersion-based learning experience. Quite surprisingly, if you haven't been exposed to the native tones of a language before the age 6, you will have difficulty achieving a native accent. It seems to go against many of the traditional ways students learn languages, with many students often trying to pick up a new language in high school.Did you know that many kids start learning another language just when their natural window of opportunity to learn a language closes?
